First and foremost, if this is a dental emergency and you are experiencing severe pain, call Dr. van Zyl today at 479-337-4070.
If you are experiencing mild discomfort in your mouth and you’re trying to determine whether or not you should schedule an emergency appointment with us, here are a few things you can try to help determine the severity of the discomfort you’re feeling.
If you have a fairly large chip or crack in your tooth (or multiple teeth), that’s causing pain, and you should consider trying to see your dentist the same day. There’s a chance you’ll need a dental crown to restore the integrity and structure of the tooth itself.
If it’s a smaller crack, you may be able to wait until the next day to schedule an appointment, but you should do your best to avoid any hard-to-chew foods or particularly sticky substances in the meantime. If you feel the pain is getting more than mildly bothersome, you can take a low dosage of an over-the-counter pain reliever until you’re able to get in for an appointment.
If you’ve chipped one of your front teeth, there’s a chance you’ll need to consider cosmetic bonding or even veneers to help protect the tooth from further damage. If it’s simply a small crack, it may be repairable with a dental crown. While these are all avenues of resolution, the best course of action will come after a thorough exam and X-rays.
A lost crown isn’t necessarily a dental emergency, but you need to get it replaced as soon as possible to prevent any further damage to the tooth itself. We recommend calling our office as soon as possible, and we will work with you to schedule an appointment shortly. Losing a crown can be uncomfortable, and if you’re experiencing mild pain, over-the-counter pain relievers can provide some relief until your appointment with us.
You have the best chance of your tooth being re-implanted within 30 minutes of losing the tooth. After that, the odds of being able to salvage the tooth decreases as each minute passes by. If you’re able to, pick up the tooth by the crown (the side you use to chew your food), but be careful NOT to touch the roots. If the root of the tooth is damaged, this may affect the re-implantation process. Gently rinse the tooth with water if you’re able to but don’t scrub it or use any soaps. It’s important to call our office first to schedule an emergency appointment before taking these steps.
First, try flossing between the affected teeth to make sure the discomfort you’re experiencing isn’t due to a piece of food caught between your teeth. If you’re able to dislodge the piece of food but you’re still experiencing pain, call us to make an appointment! This could mean the area around your tooth is irritated and should be examined.
If you’re experiencing severe toothache or pain around the tooth, call us right away to schedule an emergency appointment. There are a few reasons your tooth is hurting that are cause for concern. You could have a severe cavity or have an infected pulp inside your tooth.
The best thing you can do if you’re feeling pain or discomfort in your mouth is to call our office right away and make an appointment. We need to diagnose the issue sooner rather than later so we can intervene as early as possible if necessary. To schedule an appointment, call us at 479-337-4070.
